The Anatomy of a Worm

Worms do not have the same organisms as we do. We have a brain, eyes, legs, ears, arms, neck, lungs, shoulders, and nose, but worms do not. Another difference is that we have one heart and worms have five. The last difference is that since worms do not have eyes, they need something to find their way, so they use photoreceptors that sense light.

Did you know that…?

  • A worm has five hearts?
They have five hearts! All of these hearts pump blood through their blood vessels just like your one heart.
  • A worm doesn’t have eyes?
Even though worms don’t have eyes, they can sense light, especially at their anterior (front end). They don’t like light!!
  • A worm has both, male and female organ?
Worms are hermaphrodites. Each worm has both male and female organs. Worms mate by joining their clitella (swollen area near the head of a mature worm) and exchanging sperm.
  • A worm can grow only so long?
A Lumbricus terrestris will be from 90-300 millimeters long.
